Sclerotherapy

Effective treatment of varicose and spider veins for clearer skin.

Duration

30-45 minutes

Recovery

Resume activities immediately; wear compression for 1-2 weeks

Results

Gradual fading over 3-6 weeks

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure that treats varicose veins and spider veins by injecting a sclerosing solution directly into the affected vessels. This causes them to collapse and gradually fade, restoring a smoother, clearer appearance to the skin.

The treatment

How does it work?

Sclerotherapy works by introducing a specialized sclerosing agent directly into unwanted veins using a very fine needle. The solution irritates the inner lining of the blood vessel, causing it to swell and stick together. Over the following weeks, the treated vein collapses, is reabsorbed by the body, and eventually fades from view. Blood flow is naturally rerouted to healthier veins in the area.

The procedure begins with a thorough assessment and mapping of the affected veins, sometimes using transillumination or other visualization techniques to identify feeder veins that may not be visible on the surface. Addressing these underlying vessels is key to achieving lasting results and preventing recurrence. The sclerosing solution is then injected in precise amounts at multiple points along the targeted veins.

After the injections, compression therapy is applied to the treated area. This external pressure helps the collapsed vein walls stay together and promotes optimal healing. Patients are encouraged to walk and remain active after the procedure, as movement promotes healthy circulation and aids in the absorption of treated veins. Multiple sessions may be needed to treat all affected areas, with each session building upon the results of the previous one.

  • Visible improvement after first session
  • Safe and well-established technique
  • No general anesthesia required
  • Treats both spider veins and small varicose veins
  • Restores confidence in showing your legs
Candidates

Who is it for?

Sclerotherapy is ideal for individuals who are bothered by the appearance of spider veins or small varicose veins on their legs. It is particularly popular among patients who avoid wearing shorts, skirts, or swimwear due to visible veins and who want a non-surgical solution to restore the smooth appearance of their skin. The treatment is suitable for both men and women and is most effective for small to medium-sized veins. Patients who experience symptoms associated with spider veins — such as aching, heaviness, or mild swelling in the legs — often find that these symptoms improve along with the cosmetic appearance. A medical evaluation helps determine whether sclerotherapy alone is sufficient or whether additional vascular assessment is recommended.

Frequently asked questions

Most patients require 2 to 4 sessions to achieve optimal results, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. The number of sessions depends on the extent and size of the veins being treated. Some patients see significant improvement after just one session, while more extensive cases may require additional treatments.

You should wear compression stockings as directed (usually for 1 to 2 weeks), avoid direct sun exposure on treated areas, and skip hot baths, saunas, and intense exercise for 48 hours. Walking and light activity are actually encouraged immediately after the procedure to promote circulation.

Once a vein has been successfully treated with sclerotherapy, it does not return. However, new spider veins can develop over time due to genetics, hormonal changes, prolonged standing, or other factors. Periodic maintenance sessions can address any new veins as they appear.
